Never disrespect the biological parents in front of their children. Make sure the stepchildren are kind to you. They don't have to love you but they do have to respect you. If you feel an ugly thought coming out of your mouth count to 10 and dont say it.

Remember that they are children; they did not ask for this disruption in their lives (i. e. , divorce and remarriage); they are far less able to handle complex situations than you are; and, to grow up healthy, they have a primary need for attachment, preferrably to all parents involved.

Relationships with stepchildren and their mothers requires a willingness to suspend judgement. Never give advice unless you are asked for it. Most importantly, never, criticize your stepchild's mother to the child, nor the child to the mother. Bite your tongue.

The best thing you can do is to understand that you are not their mother and that their mother is very important to them and their upbringing, even if she is being difficult. You are now a coparent to these children.
