Most riddles are just puns, so if learn puns and word plays you will get better at solving riddles. Also, a lot of riddles are common sense answers, think hard enough and you will most likely solve the riddle. If you write riddle answers down and go over them every once in a while, you will soon remember the answers.

I suggest practice a lot, read a lot (to improve your vocabulary and general knowledge), and do other puzzles that require lateral thinking, such as cryptic crosswords. Some people maintain that if you concentrate hard enough on a riddle before going to bed, the answer will come to you in a dream. I can't guarantee this method though!

Whenever I am asked a riddle, the easiest way for me to figure it out is to draw a picture in my head. Sometimes I even physically draw it out on paper. Then place yourself in the position of the characters in the riddle and how each may think. Imagining things always helps.

Riddles are a way of teasing the brain into thinking of non-conventional relationships. The best way of doing this is thinking, which can be developed by reading. Read riddle and joke books for the patterns that riddles may take. And read more in general to understand the relationships between objects.
