The rules for a homestead exemption vary from state to state, and can even vary from county to county. In general, however, you must live in your home and not use it for commerical purposes. You must also register or declare your exemption with the government (usually your local tax assessor).

The homestead exemption is a property tax exemption for a set amount on a primary residence that essentially lowers the amount of property tax that can be charged on the property. To get this exemption, contact the tax assessors' office and file a form that states the property is your "homestead" and primary residence.

In PA there is the homestead exemption act where money was released from gaming revenue. In order to apply for this you will need to contact the tax assessment office for you county. The office should be at your county courthouse.

After purchasing your home you have to go to the courthouse and fill out the paperwork to have filed for the homestead exemption.
