If your cat is matted to the skin, a vet or skilled groomer may need to shave the hair and mats off so that you can start regrowing fur.

Oftentimes the best thing to do for severe matting is to get the cat shaved and start over. Once the cat is shaved you can brush it every day as the hair grows back and avoid it getting matted again. It is very hard to brush out a severely matted cat's coat, so shaving it would be easier.

It's important to get rid of the mats without cutting the cat's skin. Either get a special mat cutter and follow the directions, or slide a comb between the mat and the skin and only cut the hair on top of the comb. You may need to cut large mats in several places and then gently pull out the strands.

You can fix the severe hair matting by brushing your cats hair with a brush and then going though it with a finer brush or comb. Repeat daily.

Cut out the mats with scissors. Be careful not to cut the skin. Then brush you cat daily to prevent them from coming back.

My cat's fur tends to get all tangled and mangy. In these instances I feel that I should make sure to do a few things. I want to always try to brush him and loosen up the tangle. I also can give him a bath to soften the spots. Then there is the cutting out of the loose hair.
