You must file Form 990 with the IRS. You must include lots of info about the organization, including publications, Board, etc. Details are at the IRS website.

This is a task I have recently gone through. First you should come up with a business plan. Then you have to estimate costs and monies raised because this is required in the forms. You then must file form 1023 with the IRS. This is a long tedious form. There are internet sites that will help you with the process.

To start getting a tax exemption for your company you need to go to your local government office and pick up paperwork, you need file an IRS form (1023). You need to do this within 27 months of starting your incorporation. You may file for an extension in certain circumstances.

There is a series of tax questions that you have to fill with IRS in order to qualify to non-profit status. It takes about 7 month to a year for the IRS to approve the application. Constant checks from IRS should be expected every year.

You must complete paperwork with the internal revenue service. Part of this will include your charter and documentation that you are truly not seeking profits.
