You need to lift weights with your legs during theoff season. You need to run every day but vary the distance. Run 10 miles about twice a week, about 3 - 4 miles the other days of the week. Take one day off each week. Do not smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol.

To be the best at long distance for track, you have to master your breathing patterns. This can be done by walking around the track several times while increasing in speed. Pay close attention to your breathing pace. Next, try jogging and running while focusing on breathing properly. Once you master your breathing patterns, your can achieve long distances.

The key factor is training your heart and lungs on a schedule just like you would train any other muscle group. The common wisdom is to train at most every other day, with a resting day between training days. Then stick to that schedule. During events, find your pace, the rhythm at which your body is expending the least effort.
