There are a variety of sedatives available for use in horses. They are most effective when administered by a veterinarian via intravenous injection, generally in he large vein running along the neck. They can also be given in an intra- muscular shot, though this does take longer to work. IM shots are given in the neck or rump.

As with humans, there are a number of medications that can be used to sedate a horse. One of the most common equine sedation drugs, ACE, can be given by IV (intravenous) or IM (intramuscular), usually in the neck. Correct dosage is especially important because a horse should remain standing(sometimes with a little help) while sedated.

For such a large animal, a non-harmful tranquillizer sedates or makes the horse go to sleep. This is usually given as an injection in various areas of the body.

If a horse is being sedated for something like having his teeth fixed they receive an injection in the neck area. For a major surgery they have I. V. s.

They are put in a sling and then given a shot to help them relax and put them asleep and then using a hoist they are put up on a large table so when they have surgery the vets will have plenty of room to work around them so this is safe for the horse.
