Cast iron is often used for the drainage or sanitary system in a building. Many buildings are also plastic PVC piping, especially underground. If your building is more than thirty years old, the piping from the toilet is most likely cast iron.

The toilet drain leads to the house drain. Most house drains are either cast iron or plastic. Houses built before the 1970s probably have cast iron drain pipes.
