Theoretically liver disease could cause cramps. Many times cramps are caused by abnormalities in electrolytes in your blood such as calcium, magnesium, or potassium. As the liver plays an important role in synthesizing various substances required for the body, advanced liver disease could lead to electrolyte abnormalities and thus cramps.

Liver disease typically causes abdominal pain, nausea, lack of interest in eating particularly of fatty foods, an increase in thirst and sweet tasting drinks. Chronic liver disease can cause muscle cramping. There is some evidence that using zinc sulfate supplements may reduce the cramping. If diuretics are used in the patient this too can cause muscle cramping.

Husband has liver disease and gets cramps often. I give him electrolytes through vitamin drinks and pill supplements. Wish the VA would treat him and stop ignoring his cramps like it isn't a big deal, because the cramps are disabling and certainly a big deal.

Muscle cramps are actually a common symptom of liver disease, though not all people diagnosed with liver disease experience it. Oftentimes, in chronic liver diseases, there is cramping in the hands and the legs, especially at the end stage of the liver disease. This occurs due to the imbalances in electrolytes in one's blood.

Sometimes there will be pain in the upper right quadrant; however, liver disease usually does not cause pain. More likely there would be symptoms of overwhelming fatigue and elevated liver enzymes, sometimes accompanied by jaundice, lack of appetite, and muscle wasting. Cramps or pain may also be due to gall stones.

Liver disease usually causes abdominal pain, which can be interpreted by the brain as cramps. This condition does not often cause muscle cramps.
