If you are gripping the racquet too tight, then it could possibly cause wrist problems. If you experience any major wrist or elbow pinching or pain I would stop using western grip. I like to keep my game quite aggressive so I choose to utilise the semi-western grip. If you are doubtful, use semi-western.

When done correctly, a Western grip should not cause any wrist or elbow problems. Several successful professional tennis players utilize this type of grip effectively. The key would be practicing.
