Does a backsplash need backerboard?

If you have drywall behind, and it's in good condition, no mold, etc, no you will not need backerboard, even if you are using a glass backsplash. However, it does make for a much better installation. If your primary wall is beadboard, or panel, yes, I certainly recommend using backerboard. It depends on how well you want to do this.

You will need to get a backsplash if you have a ceramic backerboard if you have any other backerboard then you will not need a blacksplash since many of the items are pretty large.

Not usually. Backerboard is used to provide a stable base for tile. This only important for floors where the weight must be supported without any movement.

Without a backerboard a backsplash can get the wall wet/dirty and that can damage the wall, including the risk of getting mold growing in the walls (sick house syndrome). If your backsplash is completely impermeable you won't need one but it would seem like an inexpensive way to safeguard your investment in your home.

Depending on the material of the backsplash then you may need a backerboard. One of the most common ones that will need a backer board is ceramics and tile as they will show gap easily.
