You do not have to have an attorney. You do, however, have to research the matter thoroughly so that it can be filed and pursued. Consider Small Claims Court.

No, you don't. I have filed everything, including bankruptcy myself, successfully and saved money. Your clerk of court is your BEST friend, and the internet is your second best- you can get advice, forms, and guidance. You need to be smart, and know when you have to consult a lawyer.

Although it is usually smartest to have an attorney draft any lawsuit, it is not required. People file their own lawsuits all of the time. This is called filing pro se.
