Do you have to add your child to your car insurance policy?

A teen driver increases the risk, which is why the insurance company must be notified. Failure to do so could void your coverage. Contact your agent for details.

Yes, you do have to add your child to your car insurance policy if you child is going to drive the vehicle. If you choose not to, and your child is driving and an accident occurs, you will likely have to pay out of pocket for all expenses.

Most insurance companies write family auto insurance policies so that will require you to disclose all licensed adults in the household. If your child has a license or permit they have will also have access to your vehicles, regardless of you giving them permission to drive. With all of this information you need to add your child.

If your insurance policy is named driver only, if your child is not named they may not be covered. Most states require both the vehicle and driver to be insured.
