If you've got metal crowns, there's a decent chance (but not a certainty!) that there's nickel in them. The base-metal alloys are typically nickel or chromium, though gold or palladium alloys are frequently used as well.

If you have plain porcelain crowns, then you should be fine. If you can see black lines around your gums, then your crowns are porcelain fused to metal, and the metal may very well contain nickel. Every dental laboratory uses different products, so I would recommend contacting your dentist to find out if they used nickel in your crowns.

Yes, Nickel is sometimes used for dental crowns. Other metals that may be used can include gold alloy, other alloys, or metal alloys. Nickel would be considered a metal alloy. It you go with a metal crown, less of your tooth will have to be removed. A metal crown will also cause less tooth wear.

Apparently nickel in crowns may cause kidney problems as well.

Well if your crowns are made from porcelain and they have a white filling around them, then there is absolutely no nickel. But if you can see that there is a black outline around them, then there is absolutely nickel in them.
