The Poinsettia plants that are in stores at Christmas time are grown in greenhouses throughout the nation. Poinsettia plants are local to the Central American region. The plants can grow wild in Central America and in Mexico mostly in rain forests there the habitat gives the Poinsettia the right living condition it needs to survive.

Poinsettia is native to Mexico where you'll see it covering the sides of buildings (like ivy) in the colonial villages. You'll also find it in Jamaica, Cuba and other areas where the conditions are favorable: high humidity, daytime temp around 67F and nighttime temp around 45F.

Poinsetta Plants grow wild in Florida. Florida allows a tropical climate where these plants are easy to grow. When they are grown in a tropical climate they can grow up to ten feet. When they are grown in this climate they get all the nutrients and all the water they need.

Yes, they grow in South America outside all year round. In very warm climates in the US (e.g. Florida) they can be grown outside in a sheltered location. They do not have bright red leaves when grown like this. They must be propagated and kept in a green house to develop the red leaves.
