Yes. HCG levels rise with a viable pregnancy. When hCG levels fall off, the most likely explanation is that the pregnancy is no longer viable. HCG is produced by the embryo. After the embryo stops producing it, the placenta takes over. If the embryo is no longer viable, it does not produce hCG.

Often times, HCG levels that do not rise or steadily drop are an early indicator of possible miscarriage. HCG levels increase regularly in a normal, viable pregnancy. If a non-viable pregnancy is suspected, your doctor will want to monitor your HCG levels to make sure they are rising as expected.

Yes they do, as well as nothing showing on an ultrasound or your HCG levels dropping or not doubling after the first 48 houts.

Not necessarily. The actual measurement of HCG itself is not important. What is important is your doubling time - in other words, the amoutn of time it takes the level of HCG to double in size. Doctors want this to happen in less than 72 hours, usually fourty eight.
