Take a note of your belongings and their approximate value. If their value is lower than the cost of the price of yearly insurance cost, then it is not worth getting renter's insurance. Renter's insurance won't be able to irreplaceable items like mementos and photographs. Some landlords would require you to get renter's insurance before you can move in.

Yes, if you rent your home. It covers personal property and some liability coverage which are not provided by a landlord.
