Do I have to use harsh chemicals to clear a drain? Is there an alternative?

Not only do you not have to use them, but drain chemicals rarely work, and they are terrible for the environment. Use a drain snake to clear a drain. This physically removes the clog (as opposed to chemically burning them). If its a mild clog, use a plunger.

When I have a clogged drain, I immediately put some big pots of water on the stove to boil. While my water is getting hot, I pour vinegar, salt and backing soda down the drain in no particular order, then I pour hot water down the drain, I sometime have to repeat it, but it does clear the drain.

the most effective way to clear a drain is to use a plumbing snake. it mechanically removes the clog - chemicals can never compare. you can call a plumber to do this, or rent one. its messy and annoying but works fantastically!

Yes there is. You have 2 main types of drain blockages. Inside the house the location of the blockage will often be in the 'trap'. opening it up and clearing the debris may solve your problem. If the problem is outside, you should open up the manhole and stir it up if it is filled, this should solve the problem.

In some cases harsh chemicals are required to clear a drain, but they should only be used after you have tried to clear the line with a snake. Most plumbers have a power snake that will cut through the worst of back ups, you should try that as your first option.
