Question by  MizM (27)

Do finches live in cold weather or do they fly south for the winter as well?

I have several finches that are always in my back yard, I would be very sad if they left for the winter.

I live in Utah (Northestern, over a mile high)and every spring the house finch (red breast) comes back to breed. It is now mid October and I heard a finch trilling and jsut saw them today. However, they did disapear over the summer. They are definitely making a nest.

It will depend on how cold the area gets and the type of finches you are referring to. Most finches do migrate, but sometimes you get to see winter birds.

It depends on what kind of finches you have in your yard. Gold Finches and House Finches don't migrate. Some species of finch do migrate to warmer climates, but some winter where they live.

There's many, many different species of finches. Depending on where you live, it's very likely some will migrate to warmer areas. But, on the other hand, other finch species will come around for winter from even colder areas. Some finches will also make shorter, more local migrations in response to weather conditions and food availability.
