Do both people on an insurance claim check need to sign it in order to cash it?

My husband and I were given an insurance claim check, he is out of town and I need to cash it.

As with all drafts or checks, all parties need to endorse for payment or deposit. Unless you have power of attorney for the other party(ies), you will be required to get signatures. This is not specific to insurance settlements, but common to all checks.

If his name is on it both of you are going to need to sign it. Most of the time it probably wouldn't be a huge issue but since insurance claim checks are so large they like to have both signatures to verify one persons not stealing the money.

If you deposit the check to a joint account in both your names, you can deposit it without his signature. You cannot directly cash it without his signature on the check.
