No its absolutely not impersonal.Well its a good way to wish someone beloved who is a lot far away from you.And various designs from various sites makes the online birthday cards so nice.

It depends on the person. A lot of people love to open their emails to a silly or meaningful card and some people might be offended.

A birthday gift online is not as personal as a handmade one but it's much better than not sending one at all. I think that so few people mail things today that receiving a card in the mail (USPS) is like a special treat and recommend it.

Yes, online birthday cards are extremely impersonal. It might even go into the person's junk mail. It doesn't take much effort or though either.
