Fire investigators can start from a variety of areas, but usually require experience in forensic science, engineering, and law enforcement. They generally begin their careers in police or fire departments.

You would need a degree in Fire Science in order to become a fire investigator. Also, sometimes well-seasoned firefighters become investigators because they have learned what different kinds of fires look like and start from.

Typically this starts with a college degree, usually in some sort of engineering whether it be mechanical, electrical, or civil. Civil engineering is the most helpful in determining the causes of structure fires. Usually fire investigators start out as firefighters though it is not required. Training can be gained on the federal level from the ATF and other oganizations.

There are special courses you can take in order to become a fire investigator, in addition, I would highly recommend having a background in fire rescue (i. e. being a firefighter).
