You can still buy Tape recorders for many things. For instance Radio shack sells them for people to use to tape interviews or students taping classes. Another new tape recorder can hook up to your computer through the usb port and let you make MP3 files out of your recordings so you can put them on CD's.

You can still find actual tape recording devices with a little searching. Newer records are digital. This means you no longer have to by tapes. They are also smaller and some are rechargeable. After you record something you can play it back or transfer it over to you computer for storage.
