First pick a theme for the party. Everything else will follow. Do you want to have a Hawaiian luau or a disco party? Pick a them, then pick a location.

Think about: How many people you want to invite? How close to your husband are they? How formal is this? Then: Where is a good venue for this combination (your home is fine for most)? What do these people like to do that is appropriate? How much food do I need? What would my husband like?

The best place to start is to decide what kind of party you want. Is it a serious affair? Is it fun and games? If you're planning fun, having a theme can help a lot- maybe a casino night, or a party themed after his favorite movie? For serious parties, just starting with colors can help a lot.
