Can you help me troubleshoot the temperature gauge in a Volkswagen Jetta?

The temperature gauge in my Volkswagen Jetta is acting up.

The gauge could be acting up or the engine itself. Check your coolent and oil if normal check your fuses.

Just perform a check on your cooling system. Make sure the temperature sensor is good, check your coolant mixture, check the fans to make sure they switch on correctly, and replace your thermostat if no other problems can be found.

The engine runs hot (not too hot). When you are at idle, open the hood and see if the black fan in the engine compartment is running. It should be (attached right to the radiator). If it is not, no problem,it needs to be fixed. I'll help you through how to fix it.

It could possibly be a bad temp sensor causing the problem, so you may want to get that checked out first. Most likely you'll find that that is indeed the problem or some other electrical component may be the culprit.
