All starter's work the same way. If your starter doesn't work everytime then your starter's stater is failing. Youu can tap it with a hammer while someone starts it to help it turnover. In the end you simply need a new starter. The only other choice is to have someone rebuild it.

Detach and clean the battery cables. Make sure the battery water is at the proper level. Check charging at idle, it should be 14+ volts.

See if the motor turns over when you turn the key. If it does, your starter is fine. If it clicks instead check and clean the battery terminals.

Clicking sound upon switching to start means insufficient current delivery. Or, starter is stuck up. No clicking sound means no current at all reaching the starter. Also check the ignition.
