The profession of nursing has existed for centuries, but until the 1800s there was little formal organization in this field. Clara Barton (1821-1912)was the founder of the American Red Cross, one of the first groups to provide specific medical disaster assistance to people in need. The English nurse Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) was a famous philanthropist.

Florence Nightingale, a well educated woman became a nurse, worked hard and after that people accepted nursing as a respectable profession, before that it was done by peoples serving punishment.
