The Bio-Wheel filter is different than an ordinary carbon filter in that its pleated "wheel" cartridge rotates, providing additional surface area for benefical bacteria to help maintain water integrity.

The one we used was the Tetra brand. They work really well, but you have to remember not to touch the wheel and to replace it as needed. As long as the wheel is spinning and clean there should be no need to touch it. I was impressed.

The wheel adds a biological component to the filtration, giving this brand an edge over filters like whisper and other brands. The wheels often do not spin in their slots, though. The mechanical filtration is excellent, and the pump parts do not seem to bind up as much as some other brands. Do choose the right size for your tank.
