Can water be run while a water softener is cycling?

I need to run water.

A water softener uses a medium that serves to exchange "ions" of calcium and magnesium with sodium and potassium. Hard water contains large amounts of calcium and magnesium. Yes it can, but depending on the quality and age of your softner you may have a couple side-effects. Your water may taste salty, and/or you may lose some water pressure.

Yes, but it may have a salty flavor when drinking it or not produce as much soap suds if you are taking a shower, washing dishes or doing laundry.

Yes, it is always fine to run the tap while the water softener is cycling. In fact, doing so actually helps the water softener complete is cycle even more efficiently.

The better quality water softners come equipped with a timer . You can set the timer to cycle at night when you sleep
