It would be best to wait. While there are many reasons for a missed period, certainly pregnancy is at the top of that list. Use other birth control methods for now, and visit your doctor as soon as possible. After ruling out a pregnancy or other significant health issue, she will be able to advise you on using your presciption.

If there is any chance you could be pregnant already, you should NOT be starting birth control pills. Go see your doctor if you have any concerns- they would be able to prescribe a method of birth control suited to your needs. If you suspect you may be pregnant already, you can take a pregnancy test.

If you've missed a period you should check with a doctor to make sure you are not pregnant. You should always start a brand new pack of birth control pills on the last day of your period. If you start in the middle of the cycle you will have spotting all month until your next period.

Assuming you have had a regular cycle in the past: if you have skipped a period, are currently sexually active it would be wise to take a pregnancy test. If you are not pregnant, you can begin taking the birth control on the first Sunday after your next period starts.
