The vast majority of DVD players are able to play CD's. The opposite is not true. A drive labeled as a cd-rom or cd-rw drive will not under any circumstances play a DVD. The same is true with Blu-ray drives, in the majority of cases, they will play DVD's and CD's, but CD and DVD drives will not play blu-rays.

DVD drives usually will automatically play cd's if they are in origional form. If it is something burnt from a pc the DVD drive may possibly not support the format. No cd drives will not play a dvd. DVD's are more advanced in technology and require a lot of other things from the drive to run.
