pregnancy

Can drinking prior to taking a pregnancy test affect the outcome of the results?

I did not take an at home pregnancy test prior to drinking anything this morning, in fact I had three cups of coffee before testing, I am concerned that I got a false negative.

I don't think that you can get a false negative from drinking something. With home pregnancy tests, it looks for the human growth hormone that a woman has in her urine when she is pregnant. And hormones can't be affected by coffee.

I tested several times, false neg's, pregnant with twins. Should not be affected by drinking anything. Try first a. m. urine for testing.

Drinking a large amount of any liquid, and especially caffeinated beverages can alter the results of a home pregnancy test by diluting the amount of pregnancy hormone in your urine. If you still think you are pregnant, try taking a new home pregnancy test in the morning as soon as you wake up, and before doing anything else.

Although it is slightly unlikely that drinking before a test will result in a false negative, it is said that if you drink a lot of fluids before it COULD dilute your urine enough to give you false negative. Not sure on what constitutes a lot though.

The first urine of the day has the most concentrated, but usually even a little HCG will show up as a slight positive.
