Traditionally James Bond is British , there are many American actors that could easily do an English accent. However, I think the whole premise that the books is based on, the upper crust English gentleman would be lost. The role of being a spy could relate in any country. I think it would be best to leave as written.

It's not really a matter if an American can play the part it's will an American will ever be allowed to play James Bond. The British are very protective of their signature roles and don't take kindly when foreigners want to. That is why there was such an uproar when Renee Zellwegger was tipped to play Briget Jones.

An American could play James Bond, but you need to remember that the character is a British secret service agent so he would need to sound British.

I think they can, if they are able to imitate the english accent. But I'd prefer british speaking person due to the accent. It sounds a lot better and cooler for that role

Although The James Bond series is based in America, The actual story is based on Britsh spies. Therefore, it would go against the original storyline if they had an american James Bond. This is why it has not been an American in the previous films in the series portraying 007.
