At what age should you geld a colt?

The normal age for gelding is between one and two years of age. However, some colts can reach sexual maturity before others and if this change causes the horse to be too much of a handful, gelding can be done earlier. You can also wait longer to allow for further develpment if the colt's personality allows it.

This is a complete matter of choice and preference. I have seen it done both very early and very young. For me I feel that leaving it later allows the colt to develop further

In order for a colt to be gelded, he does not necessarily have to be a certain age. The only requirement for gelding a colt is that both testicals must be fully descended. It is advisable to geld a colt before any undesireable stud behavior begins.

There are several trains of thought on this. Some say to geld as soon as both testicles have descended, others say to wait until the colt is at least two. I prefer to have colts gelded around the start of their yearling year. This time allows for both testicles to descend fully, and the colt to mature physically some.

This is a tough question. While you can geld as early as 6 months, it is important to be sure that the colt's testicles have dropped. Gelding around the age of two allows the colt to develop physically and will most likely result in a more muscular physique.

I think that around one year old is a good time to geld your colt. They have had time to grow.

As long as they are healthy, colts should be gelded as soon as possible after birth because of the effects of their hormones. The changes that testosterone makes in their brains can be minimised and you will have a happier horse over his lifetime.
