In ASA slow pitch and all slow pitch there is no such thing as a designated hitter. Slow pitch has the Extra Hitter which bats in the 11th spot. All batters in the lineup must bat. The only thing you could do is sub a player that is not in the lineup and then reenter the starting player.

Well that all depends on the league you play in much like in major league baseball. When a league is formed the people setting it up figure out how they want the rules to be set up.You should check with the other people who play in the league to see if the rules suit you.

During co-ed league play for slow pitch softball, a team may a designated batter when they field twelve players. The players must be equally divided, six males and six females in order to utilize the option. For example, if the team only has five women, then they would be able to implement this rule.

Slow pitch softball is actually designated for fun and recreation. Former baseball players love to play this sport mostly organized traveling teams and other local groups. At the college level only females play fast pitch since slow pitch is not longer an option. No designated batters are needed, since usually each player can hold on their own with the bat.
