horses

Are horses considered malnourished if you can see their hip bones?

Most horses I've seen are just plump enough to hide the bony portion of the hip. Is a horse with a visible hip bone outline considered unhealthy?

If you watch Animal Planet you will see that all the horse that they rescue are malnourished and have bony hips, and usually their middle sags.

I would say the horse is malnourished or close to it. I would contact a vet to find out for sure.

If the spine and hip bone are extremely visible through the hair then it can be a sign of malnutrition. Also look for dull eyes and lethargy.
