There are several varieties of grosbeak found in North Carolina, including the blue grosbeak, the rose-breasted grosbeak, the evening grosbeak, the black-headed grosbeak, and the cardinal grosbeak, sometimes referred to as the cardinal-bird, which is the state bird of North Carolina.

The blue grosbeaks have had some of their best nesting in North America in the Carolinas. However, their breeding time overlaps that of the Indigo Bunting so that lowers the population somewhat.
