Question by  Heloise (397)

Are double sided deadbolts worth it?

I want my house to be safe. We have had several break-ins around the neighborhood lately.

No, they are not really worth it. Locks are only meant to keep honest people locked out. The door can easily be broken in to using other means such as brute force, locking picking, or drilling out the lock. The double sided deadbolts won't prevent the break in at all.

Any door with windows, or windows around the door where it's possible for someone to break the glass to reach in and open the deadbolt is a good candidate for a D/S deadbolt. If you don't have that problem, it's probably not worth spending on one.

I would not go with out them in my house; they're on every door. However, if a person really wants in your house, no amount of locks will stop them.

They sure are worth it. You can pop a regular doorknob lock with a credit card. No way can that happen with a deadbolt.

Yes, I think so. I have had my house broken in, they kicked in the door, and we didn't have a deadbolt, just the regular key lock that came with the house.

Double sided deadbolts are arguably a little more secure than typical deadbolts, but that timy bit of extra security comes with a steep cost. The huge downside to a double sided deadbolt is that you will not be able to escape from your home without a key in case of fire or fleeing from an intruder.
